How do I create a hanging indent for a citation?

Microsoft Word:

  1. In order to create a hanging indent, you will need to select the citation (or citations) that need to be formatted. Highlight the citation(s) and right-click. This should bring up a list. Select the "Paragraph" option.
  2. From here, a box labeled "Paragraph" should pop up. Go to the area that is titled "Indention", then "Special". Select "Hanging" from the drop-down menu, then click OK. 
  3. This should format your citation to have a hanging indent!

Google Docs:

  1. In order to create a hanging indent, you will need to select the citation (or citations) that need to be formatted. Highlight the citation(s) that you need to be formatted. From there, go to the top and select "Format", then hover over to "Align & indent". This should bring up another menu. Select "Indentation options" from the list. 
  2. From here, you should get a box that pops up labeled "Indentation options". Click on the drop-down menu under "Special" and select "Hanging".
  3. This should format your citation to have a hanging indent!
