When are 2025 choral hearings?

Dear students,

This is a reminder that if you are interested in auditioning for the choirs of Westminster, the online Choral Hearings Form must be filled out by SUNDAY, AUGUST 24TH

Please note, due to scheduling, there is a possibility your hearing may be scheduled on an overflow date (Saturday September 6th). You will be alerted in advance of your scheduled time and can let us know if you have a conflict.

Below is a copy of the information from the previous email.

__________________________________________________________

Each year, choral hearings take place during the first week of school. All students are welcome to come and audition for potential placement in a Westminster choral ensemble.

If you are interested in auditioning, please fill out the online Choral Hearings Form by SUNDAY, AUGUST 24TH

https://forms.gle/2yHgkc3s5QAmV9qu6

If you are an incoming WCC freshman or transfer student, you are required to participate in Choral Hearings.

If you are a returning Westminster Choir College student and you have already participated in last semester’s Spring choral hearings you do not need to fill out this form.

What are hearings?

Hearings are used to determine many factors, including voicing in core ensembles and possible placement in select ensembles, and are run by the conducting and voice faculty.

This fall, choral hearings will take place in Gill Chapel from 12-5p on Tuesday, September 2, 2025. A schedule with your exact time slot will be sent after the form deadline.

You may warm up prior to your hearing in the practice rooms on the basement level of Gill Chapel.

After filling out the required form, you will receive a confirmation with your answers. Please make sure to double-check your answers and contact Performance Management if there are any mistakes.

Choral Hearing Requirements:

All elements are required, regardless of major:

Prepared Piece
Sing a memorized, 2-3 song, aria (or section of one) that demonstrates your musicianship and vocal abilities. (For non-music majors, this can be a folk song or hymn and need not be memorized.) An accompanist will be provided. Bring a neat hard copy of the music for the accompanist.

Sight Reading
You will be given a short example to sight-sing. Take a moment to review it before singing. You may sing on solfege syllables, numbers, or a vowel (like [u]). Keep a steady tempo and try to avoid stopping.  If you would like to practice, use a hymnal, basic music text, or online resources and practice singing individual lines without the aid of a piano.

Vocalizing

You may be asked to sing some arpeggios or scales on various vowels to assess range and stylistic flexibility.

Finally, please keep in mind that your hearing is treated as an audition. You should be appropriately dressed (business casual, no jeans or sweats) and should arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled hearing time.

Please contact Performance Management at performancemgmt@rider.edu if you have any questions.

Thank you!
