Gift materials added to the University Library collections conform to the same criteria used in the selection of purchased materials. Due to the high cost of managing the gift process, only items deemed likely for inclusion in the collections will be accepted. 1. Classes of Materials. University Library does not accept: a. Back issues of serials b. Textbooks c. Mass market paperbacks d. Materials in any state of disrepair, including but not limited to, books annotated or underlined, water damaged or moldy e. Commonly held titles, e.g., best sellers

f. Duplicates of library holdings unless heavily used g. Outdated media formats (e.g. videotapes, audio tapes, long-playing (LP) or 78 rpm discs, an audiotape formats, or 12-inch laserdiscs) h. General encyclopedias

2. Condition. The materials must be in good condition. The library does not accept items that are: a. torn, brittle, or falling apart b. missing pages c. extensively marked up d. exhibiting any evidence of mold or mildew e. photocopies

3. Donation Process The library can accept a gift only after receiving and reviewing an itemized list of materials offered; however, we encourage prospective donors to contact the library for a conversation about a possible donation before compiling such a list. Contact reference@rider.edu for more information. The Library will not appraise gifts in accordance with Internal Revenue Service statute. The Library encourages donors to obtain an appraisal of their gifts before making the donation. Gifts of materials are accepted with the understanding that the Library becomes owner of the materials. The Library reserves the right to determine their retention, location, cataloging treatment, and other considerations related to the use or disposition of those materials. NOTE: University Advancement will be notified and will send an appropriate acknowledgment of gift items or monetary donations.
