Definition of Textbook

Answer

For Collection Development purposes, a textbook will be defined as the following: A textbook is a monograph written and published to be used primarily in classrooms for instructional/educational purposes. A textbook typically contains an overview of its subject, with a glossary of terms, limited footnotes and a brief bibliography of the most important sources related to the topic. Often a textbook will end chapters with summaries and/or questions for students to discuss related to the content of the chapter. With the exception of the Freshmen Textbook Program (which is paid for by the Rider University President), University Library does not typically purchase textbooks.
